ELA 9 Syllabus 2022/23 1st 3rd 6th HRS

Class Description
With an emphasis on Rigor, Relevance, Relationships, and Critical Response and Stance, ELA 9 at Harbor Beach HS is a full year class encompassing the Common Core State Standards and the College and Career Readiness (CCR) Anchor Standards.
The CCR Anchor Standards for reading are 1) Key Ideas and Details, 2) Craft and Structure, 3) Integration of Knowledge and Ideas, 4) Range of Reading and Level of Text Complexity.
The CCR Anchor Standards for writing are 1) Text Types and Purposes, 2) Production and Distribution of Writing, 3) Research to Build and Present Knowledge, 4) Range of Writing.
The CCR Anchor Standards for speaking and listening are 1) Comprehension and Collaboration, 2) Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas.
The CCR Anchor Standards for language are 1) Conventions of Standard English, 2) Knowledge of Language, 3) Vocabulary Acquisition and Use.
Additionally, and aligned with the Michigan Merit Curriculum, the four Michigan Career & College Ready skills: technology and tools, argument and reasoning, communicate and collaborate, and solve problems will been considered.
Material Covered
Most of the content of this class will be focused on developing a highly organized style of essay writing (also standardized test essay writing prep), Career/College Exploration, as well as various informational and literature sources throughout the school year.
Some material and/or sources used for the class include (but not limited to) the Step Up To Writing Handbook and Tool Kit, XELLO, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, Short Story unit using American 24-Karat Gold: 24 Classic American Short Stories, Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom, a YAL (Young Adult Literature) book of your choice, Bronx Masquerade by Nikki Grimes, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, and Romeo & Juliet by William Shakespeare.
Some of the small texts, novels and all dictionaries… we will be using will need to remain in class because of the limited copies we have.
Informational reading on current issues/news/topics will come from Upfront.
Books and material will be distributed to each student as they are needed.
Grading Policy
Each assignment when given will be worth a specific number of points, depending on its length and complexity. For each major assignment, each student will receive a rubric.
All papers will follow the rules, examples… in the HBCS ELA Handy Pages (I’ll get you your copy soon). Some instructor specific requests might occur as well.
The HBCS HS ELA Handy Pages and ALL typed handouts will need to be placed in either a 1 or 2 subject theme book (with pockets works best) or your portfolio.
For ALL group assignments, ALL members of the group receive the same grade.
No opportunities for extra credit will be given. Late assignments will be allowed as per the Harbor Beach HS homework policy. End of marking periods and semesters are established dates – NO late work can be accepted.
Class Rules
In addition to following the HBCS High School Rules, and the HBCS PBIS Growth Mindset Model, this class will also honor the following.
Needed Supplies
- A 1 or 2 subject theme book (with pockets works best).
- A 1 ½” or 2” three-ring binder for completed work and
typed handouts. This portfolio might be graded.

- Absent from class=YOU are still responsible for ALL work. Check the board! Check website!

- Please take note that Speaking, Expressing, and Listening are important elements to ELA 9. ALL students WILL BE expected to participate in class.
- WIN/WYN TIME can be used for students who do not verbally participate in class.
- WIN/WYN TIME can be used when students have not turned in assigned work on time.
- Professionalism = Appropriate OR entire assignment to be redone OR a zero.
