PASSING BOTH SEMESTERS OF ELA 12 IS NEEDED TO GRADUATE
This is your last year of high school, and you will soon be starting the next phase of your life. Please take advantage of this class by practicing and improving your ELA and Communication skills.

Class Description (ELA 12 is required for graduation)
Grading Policy
Each assignment when given will be worth a specific number of points, depending on its length and complexity. For each major assignment, each student will receive a rubric.
All papers will follow the rules, examples… in the H.B.C.S. ELA Handy Pages (Your copy back to you soon). Some instructor specific requests might occur as well.
The H.B.C.S. ELA Handy Pages and ALL typed handouts will need to be placed in either a 1 or 2 subject theme book or your portfolio.
For ALL group assignments, ALL members of the group receive the same grade.
No opportunities for extra credit will be given. Late assignments will be allowed as per the Harbor Beach HS homework policy. End of marking periods and semesters are established dates – NO late work can be accepted.
Easy Pop Quizzes will occur on days when several classmates are missing. Makeups for these quizzes will be essays.
Class Rules
In addition to following the HBCS High School Rules, and the HBCS PBIS Growth Mindset Model, this class will also honor the following.
Needed Supplies
- A 1 or 2 subject theme book (with pockets works best).
- A 1 ½” or 2” three-ring binder for completed work and
typed handouts. This portfolio might be graded.

Class Description (ELA 12 is required for graduation)
- This course will help to strengthen and enhance the reading and writing skills that students have learned up to this point.
- Students will be creating personal narrative writings while working on their Senior Memory Books.
- Current Informal Reading will come from Upfront. Some additional informal reading will also come from Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass and our writing and reading textbook: 13th edition of Patterns for College Writing.
- ELA 12 Literature Reading will include (but not limited to): Jake Reinvented, Anthem, the five people you meet in heaven, Nathaniel Hawthorne Short Stories, The Crucible.
- Additionally, and aligned with the Michigan Merit Curriculum, the four Michigan Career & College Ready Skills: technology and tools, argument and reasoning, communicate and collaborate, and solve problems will been covered.

- Absent from class=YOU are still responsible for ALL work. Check the board! Check my web page on the school website!
- WIN/WYN TIME ** can be used for those absent who do not turn in their absent work.
- Please take note that Speaking, Expressing, and Listening and important elements in ELA 12. ALL students WILL BE expected to participate in class.
- WIN/WYN TIME ** can be used for students who do not verbally participate in class.
- WIN/WYN TIME ** can be used when students have not turned in assigned work on time (** WIN2, 4th & 7th hours, or after school also work).
- Full Name AND legible on ALL papers turned in. FN LN.
- Professionalism = Appropriate OR entire assignment to be redone OR a zero.
- MUTUAL RESPECT Instructor=Student, Student=Student, Student=Instructor.
- PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES IN CLASS – Once you are in our ELA room, if I see it, I will collect your device. ASAP, Mr. Stalker taking it to the HS Office.
